Shots fired outside Newburgh bar

NEWBURGH – Town of Newburgh Police are looking for three men who were involved in an incident at a local bar in which one of them allegedly pointed a gun at a patron and employee. As the men fled the scene, shots were fired from their vehicle.

At about 12:15 a.m., police were called to a report of shots fired at Average Joe’s Bar at 5528 Route 9W. Patrons and employees denied any gunshots were fired, but officers found one patron who had been assaulted.

Further investigation resulted in several shell casings being found on the side of Route 9W near the bar.

Police are trying to sort out a number of conflicting stories from workers and patrons. They said it appears that at least three men came into the bar shortly before midnight and exchanged words with one patron, who was punched in the face. The three men left the bar. Police were not called at that time.

The men returned a short time later and one of them allegedly pointed a gun at an employee and patron outside the building where more words were exchanged.

The three men then fled in a white SUV and shots were fired.
There no reports of injury by the gunfire.

The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Town of Newburgh Police at 845-564-1100.
