Greene Land Trust protects Coxsackie Creek wetland parcel

COXSACKIE – The Greene Land Trust has acquired a 38 acre parcel along the Coxsackie and Climax creeks in the Town of Coxsackie.

The acquisition was made possible by a $35,000 grant from the state Department of Environmental Conservation Hudson River Estuary Program as well as a donation of a significant portion of the parcel’s value in a bargain sale.

The property was acquired from John Flach for $11,500 and was once a portion of the Collier Farm located between Kings Road and Route 9W.

The property includes an extensive streamside wetland as well as open grassy habitat favored by grassland species like the northern harrier hawk and short eared owl.

“In this Hudson Quadricentennial year it is plainly apparent that the natural beauty of the Hudson Valley has been a gift for successions of generations,” said Assemblyman Timothy Gordon. “The actions we take today will bear fruit for centuries to come.”

The Greene Land Trust does not anticipate public use of the land because of the limitations on access and parking, though the creation of a small viewing area and educational kiosk along the road for bird watchers to use may be possible in the future, officials said. Also under consideration is restoration of a small stream that was straightened and relocated in the past, as well as improvements to the wetlands.
