Immigration reform vigil held in Putnam

CARMEL – Members of the Hudson Valley Community Coalition, the New York Civil Liberties Union and the Workers Rights Law Center of New York gathered in Carmel Tuesday to join similar vigils around the nation in support of immigration reform.

Betsy Palmieri of Hudson Valley Community Coalition said they want politicians in Washington to take action now.

“We are looking for reforms that will allow people who are currently undocumented to earn a path to citizenship so that they can be part of society and pay taxes and join their families and we think that it’s very achievable that we can do something if Congress and the President do what they said they would do,” she said.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez Tuesday introduced an immigration reform bill that would pave the way for undocumented aliens to become citizens.
