NEW WINDSOR - A Town of New Windsor Police Department K-9 Team recently competed in the United States Police Canine Association National Trials held in West Des Moines, Iowa. The team, Officer Frank Volpe and K-9 Roscoe, received Nationally Certified Police Dog 1 (PD1) status.

The trials were held from September 27 through October 2, in West Des Moines. A total of 94 teams from throughout the United States competed in the events which included obedience, agility, criminal apprehension and scent work.

Officer Volpe and K-9 Roscoe scored 650 out of a possible 700 points and ranked 32nd in the Nation. They also teamed up with local teams from Warwick (Officer Kevin Halsey and K- Riley) and New York City and won the fourth place Regional Team Trophy.

In April of this year Officer Volpe and K-9 Roscoe competed in the regional trials held at the Farmingdale University campus in Farmingdale, New York.  They earned second place overall novice and were awarded trophies for first place criminal apprehension, second place obedience and second place scent work. Their scores at that event qualified them to compete nationally.

K-9 Roscoe is a four-year-old German shepherd imported from Slovakia and Officer Volpe is a six year veteran of the department. Since 2006, K-9 Roscoe has been cross-trained for both Patrol and Narcotics Detection. He has assisted in locating one wanted suspect and over 11 pounds amounts of marijuana, nine grams of cocaine, $15,180 in cash and a loaded handgun. Officer Volpe and K-9 Roscoe are also active in presenting K-9 demonstrations for local schools and organizations.

The Town of New Windsor Police Department currently has three K-9 Teams--Officer Volpe and K-9 Roscoe, Officer Brian Mclean and K-9 Rommel; and Officer Jason Ross and K-9 Knox.
