Widow of local WWII vet receives husband’s medals

Mrs. Sterling and Hinchey

MONTICELLO – The late Wilson Sterling served in the US Navy from 1941 to 1946 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on the naval base.

He passed away over two years ago and on Friday, Congressman Maurice Hinchey presented his widow, Catherine Sterling, of Glen Spey, with eight medals he earned but never received.

"These medals have great meaning because they represent the sacrifices and tremendous courage of Wilson Sterling and all of the veterans from World War II," Hinchey said. "As our nation continues to face challenges abroad, we draw strength from the examples and accomplishments of veterans from past wars such as Wilson Sterling. We are forever grateful for his service to our nation, and I am deeply honored to present these medals to Mrs. Sterling in recognition of her husband's service to our country."

The medals earned by Sterling that Hinchey presented to Mrs. Sterling were the following:
• Navy Good Conduct Medal
• World War II Victory Medal
• American Defense Service Medal (with Fleet Clasp)
• Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal
• European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal
• Navy Honorable Discharge Lapel Button
• Honorable Service Label Button
• American Campaign Medal
