Monticello mayor names Lumberland supervisor as village clerk

MONTICELLO – Mayor Gordon Jenkins said he is appointing Town of Lumberland Supervisor John LiGreci as Monticello village clerk. He would replace Edith Schop, who resigned recently.

LiGreci, until recently was Sullivan County Republican Party chairman.   Jenkins is a Republican.

Jenkins said LiGreci, whose Lumberland job is part-time, is an ideal fit for the village post that pays over $50,000 a year.

“I think John LiGreci is a more than qualified person. He’s been in government for about 14 years and I think we need a good, competent clerk who can handle planning, zoning and what the job entails to do,” he said.

Jenkins believes as mayor, he has the right to appoint the village clerk and village attorney, something the village board may disagree with. That is why he has filed a lawsuit seeking a judge’s decision on who has the authority to name people to those posts, the mayor said.
