Sailboaters safe after capsizing in Hudson

RHINECLIFF – Three people, including two young girls, are safe, after their sailboat capsized in the Hudson River, Friday afternoon.

A 12-foot sailboat had earlier taken off from an Ulster County dock with Simon Strauss, 54 of Shokan,  his 14 year old daughter, and her 13 year old friend. They sailed south on the Hudson, and then returned north.

Due to extremely choppy conditions, the boat took on water and eventually capsized. They bailed and floated south, and eventually made land about ½ mile south of Poet’s Walk in Red Hook. The area where they landed was rugged, and was difficult to reach except by an unimproved trail. The boaters were uninjured, but were treated for hypothermia at Northern Dutchess Hospital.

Members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office responded. Northern Dutchess Paramedics, the Rhinecliff Fire Department, New York State Police, and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division assisted.
