Beacon Riverfront Park named for late philanthropist

Gold speaks, Sullivan listens

BEACON – Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Beacon waterfront property now has a 2½ acre park named for philanthropist Peter Jay Sharp.

The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation donated $1 million for development of the passive recreational area, which was dedicated on Wednesday as part of Scenic Hudson’s waterfront project.

Mayor Steven Gold said that area of the waterfront has come a long way over the years.

“When I came to the city 25 years ago and I first looked this area over, there were oil drums and there was garbage and there were dogs running around,” he said. “It was really not the kind of place you would want to go to, but because of the real dedication to the environment that Scenic Hudson has shown in acquiring this property and the financial support of an organization like Peter J. Sharp putting in $1 million, this area has rally turned into a gorgeous, beautiful park that many people are enjoying.”

“This park honors a foundation that understands the broad and deep public benefit of creating special places like this along the Hudson River,” said Scenic Hudson Executive Director Ned Sullivan.
