Injured officer undergoes surgery

This was Canavan's second accident in two months; the other
involved his personal vehicle. Officials are looking at whether
a health issue may be a factor.

NEWBURGH – Police Officer Thomas Canavan was expected to be transferred to Westchester Medical Center Friday where he was to undergo leg surgery. The Town of Newburgh officer was injured when his police car crossed into the path of two ongoing buses on Route 32 Thursday afternoon, totaling the car and damaging the two full size buses.

Six high school students sustained minor injuries.

Town Police lt. Michael Clancy Friday said Canavan, 44, a 22 year veteran of the force, was being treated for leg injuries.

The State Police have been called in to investigate the cause of the accident in which Canavan’s police vehicle drove into the opposite lane of traffic, witnesses told police. Clancy said there was no apparent reason for the accident. Two data boxes in the police car have been recovered and will be examined for any clues.

Officials will explore all possible reasons for the accident including health-related, Clancy said.

This is the second accident Canavan had in two months. In early September, while driving his personal vehicle, he struck a light pole in front of Newburgh Town Hall, Clancy confirmed.
