Brush fire rages on Sharpe Reservation

FISHKILL – Strong winds continue to fan the flames as a brush fire consumes more acreage on the Sharpe Reservation in Fishkill.

The fire, which began late Thursday afternoon and burned about six acres, continues to spread with 100 acres of brush consumed, said Rombount Fire Department spokesman Kevin Barry.

The fire has been contained in some areas, but has jumped the parimeter in others, he said.

The winds, volume of fallen leaves and rough terrain are making it difficult for firefighters to knock it back.

As of mid-day Friday morning, a total of 20 fire departments from Dutchess, Putnam, Orange and Ulster counties have been called in.

The 2,300 acre Sharpe Reservation is owned by the Fresh Air fund, an organization that provides camping and other activities for inner city kids.
