NEWBURGH – Three indictments against 44 people accused of being involved in a large drug trafficking operation in parts of Orange and Dutchess counties were announced Thursday by state and local authorities.

A two year investigation culminated in what they said was a major drug operation being shut down, said Executive Assistant State Attorney General Robin Baker.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo joined the news conference via telephone and said the war against drugs is a continual battle. “This is a fight that we cannot and will not lose,” he said. “We cannot lose this fight against drugs. Period.”

Confiscated were seven ounces of cocaine with a street value of $10,000; 27 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of $172,000; 62 Vicodin pills and $83,000 in cash.

The cocaine was allegedly coming from the Bronx, Florida, Arizona, Canada and the Dominican Republic.

Police were able to crack the case and make the arrests based on a number of surveillance techniques including extensive wire tapping.

Orange County District Attorney Frank Phillips said some of those arrested are persons of interest in other unrelated cases.
