County exec fires medical examiner who is charged with DWI when he investigate fatal accident

WAWRASING -- An Ellenville man, who was walking on Route 209 in the Town of Wawarsing just before 7 p.m. Sunday, was struck and killed by a motorist, State Police said Monday.

Robert Ryan, 48, was walking on the paved portion of the roadway when struck by a southbound Dodge pickup truck driven by a 28-year-old Wurtsboro resident. No charged were filed against the driver.

Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene by Ulster County Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Sheran.

When he arrived on the scene, State Police determined he was under the influence of alcohol so he was charged with aggravated DWI and released on uniform traffic tickets returnable in town court.

Meanwhile, County Executive Michael Hein late Monday called for Sheran’s immediate resignation, saying he will not tolerate drunk driving.
