Plane flips, pilot walks away with abrasions

CLERMONT – A Bumpass, Virginia man escaped serious injuries when his vintage single-engine plane lost power,  landed in a field in Clermont and flipped over.

State Police at Livingston said Jay Dean Morrissett, 50, suffered only minor abrasions.

Morrissett had recently purchased a 1946 Ercoupe plane and was flying it from New Hampshire, where he bought it, to his home in Virginia.

At about 3 p.m., he reported the aircraft lot power due to an unknown mechanical reason. He was able to land it in a farm field. The plane flipped over when he hit a rut in the field. It sustained damage to its landing gear and cockpit.

Morrissett was treated at the scene and released.

The FAA Albany office was notified and will investigate.
