| Newburgh resident won’t go out at night without her German shepherd |
|
NEWBURGH – One resident who lives in the neighborhood were the city’s latest murder occurred says she would like to see more of a police presence there. Carrie Pane, a 26-year resident of Newburgh, said that would make neighborhoods safer and prevent homicides like the one that occurred on Tuesday night. Devlin Pemberton of Newburgh was gunned down while in a van on a city street. Pane doesn’t feel safe going out at night anymore. “I will not walk off of Montgomery Street in the evening without my German Shepherd with me.” Pane also feels that the neighborhood is one of the nicest in Newburgh and that it would remain that way if the police would patrol there. “Right now, we’re sliding down hill. We have people come through on nights and break into cars.” She felt that if the police were there more often that such incidents wouldn’t happen. “I love this neighborhood and right now we are seeing that police have cut back on their patrols.” That has resulted in escalation in vandalism and violence. Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Weber said the department does, in fact, patrol that neighborhood on a regular basis and has not cut back on those patrols.
