Two charged with shopping scam

MONTICELLO – Police in Monticello have charged a Monticello man in connection with a scheme to defraud an area supermarket.

Police said Andrew Jackson, 24, was charged with forgery in the second degree, a felony, and the misdemeanors of scheme to defraud in the second degree, petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree.

Jackson was arrested following a complaint last Sunday from the management of the Aldi’s supermarket at the Mountain Mall on East Broadway.

It is alleged that Jackson and another person filled a shopping cart with items from the store and then took them to the cashier claiming they were returning the items. The two then received cash for the items that were never purchased.

Police said the scam occurred on six different occasions.

Jackson was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail pending further court action.

The investigation is continuing and another arrest is pending.
