| Trailhead improvements hailed at Storm King Mountain |
|
CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON – Scenic Hudson and the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson Friday celebrated improvements to the trailhead and hiking trail that provide access to Storm King Mountain. Now named after two of the environmental group’s founders, the Esty and Hellie Stowell Trailhead at Storm King Mountain, is the gateway to the trails and scenic landmarks of the mountain. The mountain has been a state park since 1993 when it was transferred from Consolidated Edison, which for 17 years before wanted to build a hydro-electric facility atop the mountain. That was defeated by environmentalists and the transfer was negotiated in large part with the assistance of Esty Stowell. The trailhead is “a tribute to the power an individual can have in standing up for the needs of their community,” said Scenic Hudson President Ned Sullivan. “This trailhead project has preserved yet another important part of the village and gives residents and visitors an opportunity to access the mountains and forests above and beyond,” said Cornwall-on-Hudson Mayor Joseph Gross.
