Indian Point 3 shuts down

BUCHANAN – Indian Point’s unit 3 nuclear power plant automatically shut down Thursday morning at about 6:40 a.m. following an increase in water levels in one of the plant’s four steam generators.

There was no release of radioactivity and no threat to the safety of workers or the public, according to facility owner and operator Entergy.

Operators were in the process of shutting down one of the unit’s two main boiler feed pumps in order to investigate a vibration in the pump. The main boiler feed pumps are located in a non-radioactive area of the plant and provide water to the plant’s four steam generators.

All equipment performed as designed in response to the shutdown, officials said. The cause of the shutdown is being investigated.

Unit 2 is currently operating at 100 percent and has been online for 55 continuous days.
