| State corrections officers to be reassigned when prison annexes close |
|
ALBANY – The state prison annexes at Eastern Correction Facility in Napanoch, Green Haven in Stormville and Sullivan in Fallsburg are all slated to be closed in the fall as part of the state’s budget cutting plan. They are among seven prison annexes and three prison camps to be shuttered in a plan that is expected to save the state over $20 million in the first year and over $25 million in the following year. With the closures, inmates will be assimilated into the main prisons at those locations, but corrections officers will be offered work elsewhere, possibly in other parts of the state, said Corrections Commissioner Brian Fischer. “Transfers are done by seniority so it is possible that some of them will be able to go to a facility within a couple of miles or an hour’s drive; some may be offered a position at a facility that is four or five hours away,” he said. “That’s the way the system operates both for civil service reasons and for contract reasons.” Fischer said the prison population has declined between 20 percent and 50 percent, justifying the reason to shut down facilities.
