Man shot to death on Poughkeepsie Street

Crime scene on Mill Street

POUGHKEEPSIE – Another Poughkeepsie resident is the victim of the continued violence in that city.

Shanta Gaines, 27, was found shot at 195 Mill Street at the corner of North Bridge and Mill shortly after 12:30 p.m.  He was found lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his upper body and was pronounced dead about a half hour later at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

After an investigation, police arrested Daryl Rogers, Jr., 24, inside an apartment on Charles Street at 4:30 p.m.  Roger, a Poughkeepsie resident, has been charged with second-degree murder.

A gun was recovered at the scene of the arrest.

This is the latest in a rash of violent attacks that have occurred in Poughkeepsie in recent months.

John Pardovich lives right down the street from the shooting.  He’s got two kids and he told he is worried about the neighborhood because “there’s always a crack dealer, there’s always a weed dealer, there’s always somebody over arguing other there, fights are breaking out at least every month.”

Mayor John Tkazyik early this year convened a summit to discuss with the community the problem of violence on city streets and pronounced authorities have zero tolerance for such acts.

About three hours after the shooting, Poughkeepsie Police responded to a call for an assault at 13 Academy Street involving a victim with a serious head injury.
