Push is on to attract spring skiers

KINGSTON – It’s green beneath all of the snow in the Catskills.

And regional ski lodges want as much of that as possible.

Tourism and government officials from Greene and Ulster counties unveiled a spring marketing plan Wednesday to lure skiers to the Catskills – so they don’t go to Vermont.

“Spring skiing in the Catskills is just as fine as spring skiing in the Vermont, especially this year,” said Brian Czarnecki, director of marketing for Hunter Mountain. “It’s a great area to target, that southern Vermont corridor.”

The marketing plan includes heavy usage of billboards in and around Albany’s Capital District, especially along I-787, and the Fort Ann area, which are considered gateways to southern Vermont ski resorts.

Catskill resort owners are trying to capitalize on the fact that an estimated 69 percent of the skiers who go the Vermont are from out of state, and the billboards direct potential skiers www.VisitTheCatskills.com for more information regarding spring skiing opportunities in the region.

There was plenty of snow made in the Catskills over the winter, and nighttime temperatures are still cold enough to make more. And spring skiers are needed for the still useful white stuff.

“As the season starts to wind down, there are fewer skiers,” said Tony Lanza, the superintendent at Belleayre Mountain in Pine Hill. “But those who ski in March and April are the hardcore skiers. They are in Vermont.”
