Billionaire’s mansion destroyed in Pawling

PAWLING - A mansion on the Cogi Farm estate in Pawling was turned to rubble early Sunday when a blaze destroyed the sprawling dwelling owned by billionaire Manhattan real estate developer Trevor Davis.

The fire broke out at 6:45 p.m. Saturday and was not out until 6 a.m. Sunday, fire officials said. Flames were seen on Old Quaker Hill Road near the Putnam-Dutchess line and when Pawling firefighters arrived minutes later, Chief Dave Denzel confirmed a working fire and summoned mutual aid from neighboring departments in Dutchess and Putnam as well as western Connecticut.

Fire crews were hampered by a lack of water and the remote terrain of the area. The blaze burned out of control for several hours despite the efforts of fire crews from 11 departments that included Brewster, Patterson, Putnam Lake and Lake Carmel from Putnam as well as Sherman and New Milford from Connecticut and numerous departments from Dutchess.

Denzel said the cause of the fire was traced to a faulty chimney with the situation exacerbated since the multi-story gabled house contained a thatched roof.

Pawling Supervisor Beth Coursen said the estate that specialized in equestrian events was a show place in the Pawling area containing its own helipad and turbine for generating electricity.

Coursen estimated the value of the estate consisting of the 5,000 square foot home, its own lake and mountain views in excess of $10 million.
