Good Samaritan dies in  fall

CATSKILL – A Good Samaritan who wanted to help the occupants of an overturned car on Route 23 over the Catskill Creek in Catskill, fell to his death late Sunday night, State Police said.

Kevin Ryan, 44, of Mt. Kisco, was driving eastbound on Route 23 when he saw an overturned vehicle in the westbound lanes.  He stopped to offer aid and stepped over a concrete traffic barrier, unaware that there was a 17 foot gap between the eastbound and westbound bridges.  He 47 feet to the rocks and concrete below.

He was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Leeds Fire Department and Catskill and Cairo rescue squads assisted at the scene with the removal of Ryan beneath the bridge.

The operator of the overturned vehicle Ryan had attempted to assist sustained minor injuries and was treated and released at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
