Violent thunderstorms break trees, snap wires, flood roads

MIDDLETOWN – A fast moving thunderstorm rolled through the region Friday afternoon, knocking down trees and power lines.

Electricity was knocked out in Monticello including at the Sullivan County Government Center. As a result, county officials closed the facility around 3:30 p.m. Power was restored around 6 p.m.

Nearly 17,000 Orange and Rockland Utilities’ customers were without power at one time or another during the storm. The bulk of the outages were in Orange and Sullivan counties where spokesman Michael Donovan said 12,000 customers were without power.

Most of the service was expected to be restored by Saturday night.

As many as 10,000 electric customers in the Newburgh area were reported without power.

As the storm rolled through, a portion of Route 211 on the Wallkill/Middletown line was shut down because of flooding. Route 17K was also flooded in spots.

There were trees and power lines downed in a number of locations in Dutchess and Ulster counties as well.

A large barn on Maples Road in Circleville caught fire in the early evening and burned for hours. That may have started with a lightning strike. It rekindled overnight.
