| Town of Newburgh lays off employees |
|
TOWN OF NEWBURGH – Newburgh Town Government laid off nine full-time and four part-time employees on Friday. They include two police officers. In a prepared statement, Town Supervisor Wayne Booth said the cutbacks are as a result of reduced revenues from interest income, building and planning fees and mortgage tax. Those are further impacted by increased unfunded mandates and additional taxes including the new MTA payroll tax. Booth said there will be no loss of services or programs as a result of the cutbacks. Details of the layoffs have not been announced by the town, however, two police officers were let go, PBA President Det. Glenn Ryther told MidHudsonNews.com. “We understand that economic times are tough but we think the layoffs of employees should have been the last step, not the first step and at this time, the PBA is not convinced that the town board has exhausted all other avenues prior to laying off these two police officers,” he said. Other layoffs included two highway department workers and one employee in the town clerk’s office.
