Armed man fights with officer

PEEKSKILL - A police officer who stopped three men pushing a motorcycle down a Peekskill city street early Wednesday morning found himself in a violent struggle and foot pursuit after one of the men dropped a loaded .45 caliber handgun.

Sgt. Don Halmy observed the three at about 1:40 a.m. on Pemart Avenue and stopped to interview them. Two of the three fled, but the third was grabbed and fought with the sergeant as he tried to get away. During the struggle, the handgun was dropped and the man was able to break free leading to a foot chase.

Officers responding as back up encountered one of the men running into the Dunbar Heights Housing Project and gave chase.  In an attempt to avoid capture, Jarron Sligh, 22, broke into a residence and attempted to hide.  He was apprehended.

Sligh, who was not the one who dropped the gun, was charged with burglary in the second degree and criminal mischief in the fourth degree.

A second handgun was recovered in the vicinity of where Sligh was seen running and weapons charges may be filed once police finish their investigation.

Detectives continued the investigation and were able to identify Isaiah Scott, 32, of Peekskill as the man who dropped the gun.  He turned himself in on Thursday and was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration.

Police later learned the motorcycle was stolen during a burglary on Orchard Street in Peekskill.

Both Scott and Sligh are expected to be charged in that incident, as is the third individual whose name is not being released.  Scott and Sligh have been remanded to the Westchester County Jail in Valhalla and are due back in Peekskill City Court next week.
