West Nyack contractor charged with grand larceny

NEW CITY – The Rockland County District Attorney’s Office continues its crackdown on contractors who allegedly take money for work, but don’t do any.

DA Thomas Zugibe Friday announced Carmela Mazzara, 37, of West Nyack, has been charged with two counts of grand larceny in the third degree as felonies.

Mazzara, a contractor who did business under the corporate name Paramount Home builders, Inc., is alleged to have stolen about $20,000 from a Congers couple with whom she had contracted to perform a $290,000 renovation project to property they own in the Bronx.

No work, other than placing a fence around the property, has ever been completed at the work site, said Zugibe. Mazzara also refused all requests to the customers for an accounting of the money laid out for the project and denied the return of the funds, it is alleged.

If convicted of the charges, she faces a possible prison sentence of up to seven years.

Her home improvement license was revoked in Rockland County in January 2008 for failure to have the required liability insurance.
