Oros, Testa urge halt to condo, coop assessment bill

PEEKSKILL – The State Assembly has already approved legislation that would raise the assessment ratio for condos, coops, rental apartments and commercial buildings in Westchester County alone by 25 percent and Republican County Legislator George Oros Tuesday urged the Senate not to go along with it.

Oros said it would place an unfair burden on those affected. “This is a Westchester only bill which never came before the county legislature or the county executive here for any kind of home rule message. This was done unilaterally by the State Assembly and it has been introduced in the State Senate, interestingly enough cosponsored by a senator from the Bronx,” he said.”You would think these city folks have done enough to hurt us here in the suburbs, but they continue to work at it.”

Former Peekskill Mayor John Testa, who is running for the Republican Oros’ legislative seat in the fall, joined in the opposition to the assessment bill. “It would have a devastating effect on the senior citizens who are condo owners and residents as well as all who live in condos and coops and would particularly be another level of problem for our local businesses,” he said. “Small businesses are having a tough time as it is.”

Oros will not be seeking reelection to the county legislature, but would not say if he had any future political aspirations.
