Wappinger establishes Sgt. Palmateer Memorial Fund

WAPPINGER – The Town of Wappinger has established a memorial fund in memory of Sgt. Mark Palmateer, a native of Hughsonville, who was killed in action in Afghanistan last June.

On June 26, 2008, Sgt. Palmateer, 38, lost his life when his convoy struck improvised explosive devices, small arms fire, and rocket propelled grenades near Forward Operating Base Shank in Afghanistan. He was the first Dutchess County resident to be killed n action in Afghanistan.

Specialist Palmateer was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 101st Calvary Regiment of the New York Army National Guard. He was promoted to sergeant posthumously and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge.

Deputy Town Supervisor William Beale said donations will be accepted at the town clerk’s office or mailed to Wappinger Town Hall, 20 Middlebush Road in Wappinger.
