| Over 18,000 more jobs lost in Hudson Valley |

| WHITE PLAINS – The Hudson Valley lost
another 18,300 jobs year over year in June, bringing to 746,400 the number
of people who have become unemployed in the last 12 months, the state Labor
Department reported Thursday. Employment gains were seen only in educational and health services, where 3,400 new jobs were created. The largest declines were in trade, transportation and utilities with 6,200 jobs lost; manufacturing, where 3,600 cuts were made; professional and business services, which lost 3,100 jobs; leisure and hospitality, which lost 2,500 jobs; construction, were 2,400 positions were cut; financial activities, were 2,100 jobs were lost; and information, which saw 1,100 job losses. The government sector added 300 jobs over the year. “The Hudson Valley economy continued to weaken in June, as the private sector job count declined over the year for the 12th consecutive month,” said labor analyst John Nelson. “Layoff announcements continue to mount, a clear sign that deterioration in the job market has not ended. Nonetheless, the over-the-year change in the region’s private sector employment (-2.4 percent) outpaced both the state (-2.8 percent) and nation (-5.1 percent).”
