Rockland lawmaker asks Thruway Authority to look at dangerous Suffern exit

NEW CITY – In the wake of this week’s fatal crash in which a man was killed when his tractor-trailer truck careened off the exit 15 overpass of the Thruway in Suffern, Rockland county Legislator Alden Wolfe Thursday asked the Thruway Authority to examine that ramp with an eye toward preventing any more tragedies.

Wolfe also pointed to another incident where a truck hanged over the edge of the overpass, engulfed in flames.

The raised exit needs some fix, possibly slow speed signs or other measures, he said.

“Perhaps they could install rumble strips on the ramp that would slow traffic down and give people a physical and audible warning that they may be going too fast,” he said. “Perhaps they might even need to construct the ramp. I don’t know if the guard rail or the outside wall is sufficient to handle the types of truck traffic we are seeing on that ramp.”

Wolfe said the safety of those who use New York’s highways “should be of paramount concern.”
