| Former Mayer landfill site cleaned up |
|
BLOOMING GROVE – The former Mayer Landfill off Prospect Road in Blooming Grove has been remediated by the state Department of Environmental Conservation through its Superfund Program. The landfill operated from 1940 until it was shut down by the state in 1975. It operated as an open face dump with periodic burning of refuse. Residential, commercial, industrial, demolition and agricultural waste were allegedly disposed of at the site. A remedial investigation/feasibility study was conducted from late 1999 to 2001 to determine the nature, extent and potential health threats of the contamination and evaluate alternatives. A localized area of soil contamination associated with so-called weathered oil was found in the northeast corner of the landfill waste mass. It wasn’t until September 2008 that remediation work began; it was completed this June. Work included removal of 7,500 tons of non-hazardous, solid waste consisting primarily of the weathered oil. The soil was disposed of at an off-site state permitted facility. Groundwater generated from excavation was collected and treated on site.
