Monticello man charged with assaulting police officer

MONTICELLO – Police have charged a Monticello man with felony assault upon a police officer, and other crimes, after an incident early Thursday morning. 

Robert Phillipsberg, 42, was observed by police on foot patrol, acting suspiciously on the second floor balcony of the Heritage Inn on Broadway.  After questioning the suspect, police determined he was trespassing.

Police also found suboxone, a controlled substance.  The suspect was arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance.

While at the Monticello police station, Phillipsberg allegedly became increasingly uyncooperative, and then began fighting with officers.  During the struggle, an officer sustained a fracture in his right hand.

Phillipsberg is now in the Sullivan County jail, in lieu of $10,000 bail.
