Man who shot himself on Thruway dies

VALHALLA – The man who shot himself in the head during a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway, Monday, died Wednesday.  Police have not officially released the man’s name, but he reportedly is a 48-year-old resident of Queensbury.

The man shot himself after  being stopped for erratic driving, in the northbound lane, near New Paltz.  Police say he pulled a .45-caliber handgun and fired a single shot.  That happened while the trooper was in his cruiser processing the man’s license.

He was flown to Westchester Medical Center, where he died Wednesday afternoon.
