Diana and county legislature nervous about state takeover of OTB

GOSHEN – Orange County Executive Edward Diana and the Orange County Legislature are nervous the state could redirect funding from the Catskill Off-Track Betting Corporation, so they are addressing state lawmakers in an effort to stop the move.

The county legislature passed a resolution Wednesday opposing the state takeover of the regional off-track betting company which operates in the Catskills and Hudson Valley regions.

“When the state starts talking about takeovers of those kinds of revenue streams that have historically been sitting in the counties, we must allow for that (revenue) to continue,” said Diana.  “It’s just another statement by the state, another unfunded mandate that they want to recapture back to the state level.

According to Diana, Orange County gets roughly $1 million from the corporation on a yearly basis, and said if the state recoups that revenue stream, it will most likely be followed by an increase of taxes in the county.
