Governor announces job training initiative for alternative energy-based jobs

Gov. Paterson outlines his 'green' jobs initiative

HYDE PARK- Governor Paterson Monday announced the creation of a new job training consortium that will be filtered through community colleges and BOCES programs throughout the next few years, with hopes of creating up to 50,000 new alternative energy-based jobs in New York State.

Speaking at an energy summit in Hyde Park, the governor rolled out his Clean Energy Training Consortium, and allocated $5 million to help the program get off the ground. Paterson said the purpose of the program is to provide extensive training at community colleges and BOCES programs across the state, including several in the Hudson Valley, and to promote the research and development of alternative energy.

The governor noted that our country now imports more than two-thirds of its consumed oil, and that now is the time, despite state financial issues, to invest in wind and solar energy to "help move the state forward."

Congressman John Hall (D-Dover Plains) and Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-Hurley) were on hand to cheer on the governor's efforts.

"We have the technology parks in Ulster, and continued investment from the Hudson Valley in nano-technology and photovoltaic cell research and development. This new program is a great turn for the region and the state," said Hinchey.

Hall agreed. "The federal government continues to see the importance in investing in solar energy, and our new president will be a great asset to this cause. I am positive this will be a top priority this year."
