Mount students going back to help New Orleans

NEWBURGH – Mount Saint Mary College students will return to New Orleans a third time Saturday, January 10 to help people recover from Hurricane Katrina.

The 36 students will be in New Orleans for Mission Week through Jan. 17 working with Catholic Charities’ Operation Helping Hands.

Fr. Mark Connell, D.Min., director of campus ministry, and Jonathan Mars ’04 are chaperoning the trip.

“We’re all excited to be part of the rebuilding of New Orleans,” said Connell, who is returning for the third time. “The fact that we’re in a rebuilding phase and no longer in a cleaning up and gutting phase is encouraging.”

The 36 students are:

  • Angela Broyles, a freshman Hispanic Studies major from Old Westbury;
  • Danielle Buchanan, a junior childhood/special education and information technology major from Dumont, NJ;
  • Kimberly Bussa, a senior nursing major from Oceanside;
  • Fay Callejo, a senior biology major from Honolulu, HA;
  • Anthony Carroll, a sophomore business management and administration major from Middlebury, CT;
  • Claudine Castano, a sophomore nursing major from Newburgh;
  • John Como, a junior media studies/public relations major from Wingdale;
  • Maura Coopersmith, a senior media studies major from Easton, PA;
  • Kristen Cure, a junior media studies major from Rockaway, NJ;
  • Matthew D’Angelico, a junior media studies/history major from Shelton, CT;
  • Kristen DeRojas, a senior nursing major from Waldwick, NJ;
  • Joey Fantozzi, a senior accounting major from Staten Island;
  • Kyle Grappone, a junior public relations major from Bethpage;
  • Allison Hauser, a junior English major from New Windsor;
  • Joseph James, a junior nursing major from Troy;
  • Elizabeth Karcher, a junior business major from Franklin Square;
  • Danielle Kehoe, a junior nursing major from Goshen;
  • James Lennon, a sophomore human services/criminology major from Dix Hills;
  • Jeff Lucisano, a junior business management and administration/international business/finance major from Milford, CT;
