Three plead guilty to torching car to collect insurance money

KINGSTON – Three people have pled guilty in Ulster County Court in Kingston to plotting to torch a vehicle owned by one of them with the purpose of collecting insurance money.

The 2005 Chevrolet Blazer belonged to Rebecca Williams, who pled guilty to insurance fraud in the fourth degree. Roy Nugent and Jeremy Cullen pled guilty to using gasoline to burn the vehicle.

Nugent was convicted of insurance fraud in the third degree, attempted arson in the third degree and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth degree. Cullen was convicted of insurance fraud in the third degree and attempted arson in the third degree.

When sentenced next month, Williams is expected to receive a sentence of probation while Nugent and Cullen are expected to receive sentences of 2 ½ and five years each in prison.

The case was investigated by the state Insurance Fraud Bureau, the Town of Ulster Police Department, and Ulster County Arson Task Force.

District Attorney Holley Carnright said this is the first case since he has been in office for the past year that he used an agreement between the DA’s Office and the state Insurance Fraud Bureau.
