State will not mail personal income tax forms this year

ALBANY – In an effort to save $1 million in printing, postage and handling, the state Department of Taxation and Finance will not be mailing personal income tax forms to individuals this year.

Instead, residents may download them from the Internet or pick them up at post offices and other locations, including at State Assemblyman Kevin Cahill’s Kingston office.

“I think this is a savvy move on the part of the Department of Taxation and Finance to recognize 21st century possibilities here, but at the same time, we want to encourage people to continue to file their taxes in a voluntary and timely fashion and making sure they have the proper forms is a key part of that,” he said.

According to the Tax Department, 93 percent of the tax returns last year were filed electronically, either by the individual taxpayer, a paid tax preparer, or forms downloaded from the Internet or produced by computer software.
