ELLENVILLE – The former owner of Fins and Feathers pet store in Ellenville pled guilty to one count of animal cruelty in Ellenville Village Court.

Wendy Ayuso was sentenced to 30 days in jail with release conditional on her paying a $250 fine to the Ulster County SPCA and 75 hours of community service.

On October 10, 2007, investigators from the Ulster County SPCA obtained a search warrant following an investigation of animal neglect and abuse at the store. Ayuso, the store’s owner, was arrested by UCSPCA investigators and charged with animal cruelty. A total of 112 animals and 386 fish were seized (later surrendered) and removed.

Most of the animals were in poor health with some already dead or dying. The remaining animals received medical attention and were adopted to good homes.

“This successful prosecution was achieved with the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office and their hard work, along with critical assistance from the Village of Ellenville,” said Brian Shapiro, executive director of the UCSPCA.

“This case is justice for the animals who suffered, especially those that died, and a victory for the dedicated members of the UCSPCA who cared for them,” said Investigator Supervisor Glenn Daniels.
