Gillibrand endorses Murphy for her old Congressional seat

ALBANY – US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has endorsed businessman Scott Murphy for the 20th Congressional District seat. Both are Democrats.  The sprawling district starts to the south in the Town of Poughkeepsie and extends to Essex County.

That’s the post Gillibrand held until recently when Governor David Paterson named her to the Senate. Murphy will face off against Republican James Tedisco, who is currently the Assembly GOP leader.

“During these tough economic times, we need a businessman like Scott Murphy in Congress fighting to create jobs and helping entrepreneurs start small businesses, providing real tax relief for middle class families,” said Gillibrand, at an Albany rally.

"I look forward to working in partnership with Senator Gillibrand as the next member of Congress from New York's 20th Congressional District where I will fight to save and create Upstate jobs, work for middle class tax cuts, and set aside party labels to bring Upstate New York's values to Washington,” Murphy told supporters who gathered for the event.

Democratic Congressman Paul Tonko, who also attended the event, said Murphy Has “that experience creating jobs and driving economic development in our region.”

State Democratic Party Chairwoman June O’Neill said firsthand experience in creating jobs and growing small businesses, will make him a strong partner bringing new energy, new ideas and a new perspective to the critical challenge of getting our economy and our country once again moving in the right direction."
