| OCCF hopes charge on recyclables is not permanent |
|
SUGAR LOAF – Orange County government’s plan to start charging commercial haulers to dump recyclables at the county’s transfer stations should only be temporary, the Orange County Citizens’ Foundation says. The county recently imposed the charge on dumping plastic, glass and other recyclables, saying with other counties charges, out-of-county haulers were bringing their loads to Orange County, where it was free. Foundation Executive Director Nancy Proyect said it is their hope the charge will be temporary. “Because our landfill cannot afford (the free dumping), we understand that the legislature instituted this fee and we hope that when conditions improve and the price for recycled goods goes up on the market that the legislature will review it and perhaps remove the fee,” she said. “But, we do understand why they’ve done it.” The county will now charge $25 per ton to dump recyclables at its transfer stations. |
