Man indicted for kidnapping, raping woman

MONTICELLO – A Bronx man was indicted by a Sullivan County grand jury, Wednesday, on charges that he kidnapped a woman at knifepoint from the Sullivan Community College parking lot and took her to a motel where he raped her.

John Cruz, 21, knew the 19-year-old woman, said Chief Assistant DA James Farrell.

The incident allegedly occurred on August 27, 2009 when Cruz took the victim from the Loch Sheldrake Campus to the Budget Inn in the Village of Liberty where he attacked her.

Cruz was arrested on September 19 after an investigation by Liberty Village Police.

He was indicted on charges of two counts of rape in the first degree, criminal sexual act in the first degree, kidnapping in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree and menacing in the second degree.
