Etkin pleads guilty to theft of government funds

MONTICELLO – Suspended Sullivan County Deputy Sheriff Phil Etkin pled guilty in federal court to one count of theft of government funds.

Etkin had been indicted in 2007 in an extortion scheme involving a supposed threat against a Sullivan County resident by organized crime.

The Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Division and FBI investigated the case and determined that the threat was bogus and that Etkin was acting alone.

Under the plea agreement, Etkin faces the possibility of a minimum of probation, up to a maximum of one year in federal prison and a $100,000 fine when he is sentenced in White Plains on April 16, 2010.

Sheriff Michael Schiff thanked the FBI for their assistance and reminded the public that allegations of misconduct within the Sheriff’s Office will be investigated thoroughly and appropriate action will be taken. “Etkin’s actions were unfortunate, but they shouldn’t be considered a reflection of the hard work that our deputies do for the citizens of Sullivan County every day.”

Etkin’s plea was entered on Wednesday, December 16.
