Two stranded on island in Neversink after they lose their ATV

Man rescued from island being taken
for treatment

HUGUENOT – Two men, who went out Thursday evening for an ATV ride near the Neversink River in Huguenot, wound up cold and wet on Friday.
The men, who are from the area, wound up on an island in the Neversink River, said Huguenot Fire Chief Thomas Kalin.

“They went for a quad ride (Thursday) night evidently got into the water somehow,” he said. “Once they got into the water, they lost the ATV and they were trying to get the ATV out and realized they were too far away and ended up going out to this island. It got too cold and they couldn’t do anything and just ended up staying there for the night.”

At daybreak Friday, they decided to look for the ATV and one of the men swam to shore, some 50 feet away, in 49 degree waters.

He made his way to a store, called police and they dispatched Huguenot firefighters to the scene, said Deerpark Police Chief William Werner. Firefighters deployed a boat and rescued the other man.

Kalin said both men were taken to Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis for observation.
