Two stranded on island in Neversink after they lose their ATV

Man rescued from island being
taken for treatment

HUGUENOT – Two men, who went out Thursday evening for an ATV ride near the Neversink River in Huguenot, wound up cold and wet on Friday.

The men, who are from the area, got too close to the water and lost the ATV after dark so they decided to stay where they were for the night, Huguenot Fire Chief Thomas Kalin told MidHudsonNews.com.

At daybreak Friday, they decided to look for the ATV and one of the men swam to shore, some 50 feet away, in 49 degree waters.

He made his way to a store, called police and they dispatcher Huguenot firefighters to the scene, said Deerpark Police Chief William Werner. Firefighters deployed a boat and rescued the other man.

Kalin said both men were taken to Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis for observation.
