Indictment handed up in gang assault killing

GOSHEN – An Orange County grand jury Tuesday indicted a Middletown barber, Alvaro Cruz, 25, on charges of second-degree manslaughter and second-degree gang assault in connection with the death of Juan Carlos-Garcia in October.

Carlos-Garcia, 18, was beaten on October 10 and taken off life support on October 17.  Cruz was in connection with the attack that took place outside a restaurant.

“The gang assault charge alleges that Cruz was assisted by two or more people who were actually present, who have not yet been apprehended”, said Orange County District Attorney Frank Phillips.

Cruz was arraigned and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Police are looking for the other suspects in the case.
