CANAAN – A New Lebanon youth Monday was charged with driving a car while under the influence of alcohol and marijuana and causing an accident that led to a man’s death almost two months later. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said Lars Haas, 17, failed to stop at a red traffic light at the intersection of routes 22 and 295 in the Town of Canaan on September 25, crashing into the side of a pickup truck driven by Robert Meehan, 72, of Chatham. Meehan died November 14. As a result of an investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office, Haas was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, both felonies; driving while intoxicated, operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent, driving while ability impaired by drugs, driving while ability impaired by drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, passing in a no passing zone and passing a red traffic light. The car Haas was driving at the time of the accident was owned by his mother, Susan Haas. She was not in the vehicle at the time of the crash, but two other teenagers were. All three were treated for serious injuries at Berkshire Medical Center. Deputies found several beer cans in the car and learned that within two hours before the crash, Haas and one passenger had drank beer at the Haas residence with his mother and others, at least two of which were underage. As a result, Susan Haas was charged with three counts of unlawfully dealing with a child, a misdemeanor. Both were arraigned with Susan Haas being released on her own recognizance and Lars Haas being remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash ail or $50,000 bond.
