| Piermont bridge rededicated |
|
NEW CITY – Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef, Village of Piermont Mayor Chris Sanders and other elected officials Friday re-dedicated the newly restored Bridge Street Bridge in Piermont. Originally constructed in 1880, the Bridge Street Bridge was nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It had deteriorated significantly over the years, causing the Rockland County Highway Department to close it to vehicular traffic in 1991. In March of 2004, the county hired Bergmann Associates for the rehabilitation of the structure. The design was complete and the construction contract was approved in 2007. McNamee Construction Corporation of Lincolndale, NY, was awarded the construction contract. The work included restoring and replacing deteriorated components and cleaning and painting of the bridge superstructure, lifting towers and mechanical systems. All of the cleaning and painting was done offsite. The existing concrete and masonry abutments were repaired and rehabilitated as necessary. Although the original plan called for the existing concrete and masonry center pier to be rehabilitated, it was replaced with a timber bent consisting of five driven piles. A monument describing the history and operation of the bridge as well as other miscellaneous architectural improvements was included as part of the project. The bridge has re-opened to pedestrian traffic only and will provide a link to the adjacent Tallman Mountain State Park. The Bridge St. Bridge project was originally budgeted at $1.25 million, but the job was completed at $900,000. |
