Two charged with assault on Copake man

LIVINGSTON – State Police have charged two men in connection with the assault on a 40-year-old Copake man who came to a Greenport residence in search of his estranged girlfriend and child.

A confrontation occurred inside and ended up outside on the law where witnesses said the two assailants continued to beat the victim then place him in his vehicle, damaging it.

The victim was driven about 50 yards away where neighbors assisted him until Greenport Rescue Squad arrived. He was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital where he remains in the intensive care unit with head and internal injuries, police said.

Charged with second-degree assault, a felony, in connection with the August 2 incident were Mathias Brightly, 29, of Athens and Jacob Whiteman, 27, of Ghent.

Brightly was remanded to the Columbia County Jail without bail and Whiteman was remanded in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
