Unfunded mandates, property taxes top list of school district concerns

Gunther:  "provide a more
quality education"

PORT JERVIS – School Board members in Port Jervis as well as the business community Monday evening told state Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther Albany needs to fix many of the problems facing school districts.

Chief among them are unfunded mandates, real property taxes and the need to consolidate services.

“Hopefully we will be able to present it to the new commissioner and work toward creating a task force to look at consolidations and where we can save money because it helps taxpayers. It also can provide a more quality education for children,” she said.

Gunther also said she hopes there is movement in Albany on a circuit breaker bill, which would fund education based more on income than on the value of one’s home.
